History of Naming of Bandarban Hill District
There is a legend about the origin of the name Bandarban. According to local folklore, once upon a time, a large number of monkeys lived in this area. These monkeys would regularly come to the hill next to a spring located at the entrance to the city to lick salt. Once upon a time, due to incessant heavy rainfall, the water level in the spring rose significantly. As a result, the monkeys could not cross the spring and reach the hill. Holding each other, they would form a line and cross the spring together. Local residents witnessed this scene of monkeys crossing the spring in a chain.
From that time on, the place came to be known as “Maokhi Chhatra”. In the Marma language, Maok means monkey and Chhi means dam or barrier. Over time, through the common pronunciation of Bengali speakers, the name of the region evolved into Bandarban. Eventually, this name was officially recognized and recorded in official documents as Bandarban.
